View the Parakrama Samudra, the biggest man made tank and admire the huge statues of Buddha caved out of the sheer rock face.  Sigiriya is an archelological site in North Central Sri Lanka. It contains the ruins of an ancient palace complex, built during the regin of King Kasyapa (477AD - 495 AD). It is one of the 7 world heritage sites in Sri Lanka and is one of it's most popular tourist destinations.

The Sigiriya site consistes of a 180m tall granite rock, whose sides are so steep that at some points the top overhangs the base. At the top of the site there is a palace complex. The ruines of various chambers, stairways and pools can be seen at the top. There is a stone stairway leading from the base to the top of the mountain. About half way to the top, there is a pair giant pair of lions paws which is infact the ruind of a huge head of a lion whose open mouth served as the entrance to the royal palace. Surrounding the palace complex are the ruins of a garden complex consisting of two moats, various pools.

Day 03 – Dambulla/Kandy/ Over Night at the Mahaweli Reach Hotel kandy

 After Breakfast drive to Dambulla Cave Temple. The Buddhist monasrty.

Dambulla is a unique and important historical site because of combining a vast material in one place from a long history. Dambulla caves are supposed to be established before 1st century BC as one of the largest monasteries in Sri Lanka. The caves in the city provided refuge to King Valagamba in his 14 year long exile from the Anuradapura kingdom. Buddhist monks meditating in the caves of Dambulla at that time provided protection to Valagamba from his enemies. When King Valagamba returned to the throne at Anuradapura kingdom after 14 years of exile in the 1st century BC, he converted the caves into a temple as a gratitude to the monks in Dambulla. It was added to by several kings till the late eighteenth century. In the course of several centuries, many improvements and additions have been carried out to the sculptures and paintings and the caves became a major location to view evolution of the ancient Sri Lankan arts. The monks began the militant nationalist movement against the British in 1848 within this cave complex.

 Kandy was the last Sinhalese Kingdom until it was captured and ruled by the British in 1815.  Kandy was once named Senkadagala Pura. It was named so after a hermit named Senkada.  Most locals call this enchanting city of theirs ‘Mahanuwara’ which means ‘Great City’. However, the name Kandy came from the term ‘Kanda’ which means Mountain.

            Since this great city is located in the centre of the Island it was a challenging target for the foreign invaders who captured the coastal areas quite comfortably. Therefore Kandy created and enhanced its own independent culture, livelihood, traditions, art and architecture.  Until the British captured the city of Kandy, its kings ensured safety and protected its culture.

King Vikramabahu III built the royal palace in Senkadagala with the advice of a Brahmin. The first king of Senkadagala was Sena Sammata Wickramabahu.

As the final kingdom of the country, Kandy gave shelter to the relic of the tooth of the Buddha.  It was a vital tradition and responsibility in the 4th-century that the ruler of the nation would also be the sole protector of the relic. Therefore the royal palace and the temple of the tooth were positioned close to each other at all times.

Even today, Kandy is the focal point of Buddhism in Sri Lanka. It also remains to be one of the most sacred places for Buddhism in the world.

The second largest city in Sri Lanka, Kandy boasts of some important historically acclaimed sites such as Dalada Maligawa – The Sacred Temple of the Tooth.

Day 04 – Kandy/ Pinnawela/Peradeniya Botanical Garden / Over Night at the Mahaweli Reach Hotel kandy

After Breakfast drive to the Pinnawela Elephant Orphanage.The Pinnawela Elephant Orphanage was started in 1975 by the Department of Wildlife on a twenty five acre coconut property on the Maha Oya river at Rambukkana. The orphanage was primarily designed to afford care and protection to the many baby elephants found in the jungle without their mothers. In most of these cases the mother had either died or been killed. In some instances the baby had fallen into a pit and in others the mother had fallen in and died. Initially this orphanage was at the Wilpattu National Park, then shifted to the tourist complex at Bentota and then to the Dehiwala Zoo.From the Dehiwala Zoo it was shifted 1975 to Pinnawela. At the time it was shifted the orphanage had five baby elephants which formed its nucleus.It was hoped that this facility would attract both local and foreign visitors, the income from which would help to maintain the orphanage.

There are only a few elephant orphanages in the world. Pinnawela has now become one of the bigger orphanages and is quite well known world wide.

In 1978 the Pinnawela Elephant Orphanage was taken over by the National Zoological Gardens from the Department of Wildlife and a captive breeding program launched in 1982.

 The Royal Botanical Gardens are among the finest tropical gardens in the world. This is a 60 hectare (147 acre) garden and is the largest in Sri Lanka. Ideal for walkers, you can also bike or drive through it. They have a comprehensive collection and a scientific programme in biotechnology, ecology, conservation and taxonomy. The history of the gardens dates to 1371, when royalty shifted the court to Peradeniya and subsequently, when King Keerthi Sri Rajasinghe (1741-1780) made them into royal gardens. Their modern history started when a garden named Kew was started at Slave Island in Colombo, and then shifted to Kalutara due to space restrictions. In 1821 these gardens were shifted to Peradeniya by Alexander Moon. With tree lined avenues and drive and a variety of flowers, the gardens were the setting for the South East Asian Command Headquarters during World War II.

Day 05 – Kandy/ Nuwara Eliya/Tea Plantation and Tea Factory / Over Night at the Grand Hotel Nuwara Eliya

Situated at around 2000m above sea level and surrounded by lush tea plantations. Nuwara Eliya is the main hill resort of Sri Lanka and the heart of the tea industry. This city with an elevation of 6128 feets is the highest in Sri Lanka. Once a pleasure retreats of the European planters the town is still very much an English town with many English style bungalows and buildings.

History says Nuwara Eliya is discovered by a hunting party led by Dr. John Davy in 1818. The British governor at the time, Sir Edward Barnes, was told about this and subsequently decided to take residence there, soon creating a health resort, which soon became internationally renown.

Nuwara Eliya is decidedly English in someway (houses, gardens and places names) and was actually planned to be an English village by a pioneering Englishman, Sir Samuel Baker in the mid 19th Century.
